"5 Steps to Exercise Your Body, Mind and Soul"







Most of us would probably agree that we’re made up of both body and soul. Yes? Your soul takes up residency in your body, and your body, I guess, would be considered like a vehicle – it helps the soul to express itself. So how is your “vehicle”? Are you feeding it premium gas or regular, doing regular maintenance or letting it break down? Is it clean and shiny or dull and rusted out? We all want to get great “mileage” out of our vehicles, if you take care of it and treat it right you can, would you agree?

Shawn Phillips from his book Strength for Life tells us: “Your body, the only one you will ever have, is the foundation of your life. And it’s either an anchor limiting your freedom and potential or a source of radiant energy, vitality and joy, elevating your life and the lives of those around you. It’s your choice… will yours be a source of strength, from which you will impact the world, or an obstacle, preventing you from your dreams and desires? ... As my friend, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway is fond of saying, “If you’re going to bother setting a goal, aim high!”… My advice to you, aim high; aim for strength.”

If exercising your body feels so great than why doesn’t everyone do it? Well unfortunately for some people they have been conditioned not to value good health. Their parents may not have valued good health so therefore their children may not value it. Other people make up excuses; some people are too busy being addicted to T.V., etc.

So if this is you what can you do? First thing you can do is to be aware, be aware that you haven't made it a priority to exercise your body. Be aware that you’re not eating properly. Take 100% responsibility and know that you’re not feeling as great as you could be. I remember Anthony Robbins saying something along the lines of “get disgusted with yourself,” so if that works then do it.

Second thing to do is drop the stories and excuses you’re telling yourself: You don’t have enough time to exercise your body or I’m too old or yada yada yada…. Shawn Phillips also gives us this to ponder: “You’re never too old to gain strength. The Noll Laboratory for Human Performance compared young men with men between ages 45 and 60 and found that percentage of body fat, along with aerobic capacity, was not related to age but rather to the amount of time spent training their body. The Human Nutrition Center on Aging found muscle growth in people ranging from 60 to 96 years old was statistically equivalent to younger people doing the same amount of training with their bodies. As this research indicates, the symptoms of aging are less dependent on age and more related to lifestyle. Thus, a lifestyle that includes regularly engaging one’s body with strength training can make you strong now and keep you going strong for life.”

The next step to great health is to know exactly what you want. Know what weight you want to be, by when. How many times a week are you committed to exercising your body, for how long? How do you really want to look and feel? What will you do to exercise your body– yoga, jogging, weight training? Clarity is the key.

The forth step is to begin to see yourself as being full of energy and vitality; visualize this outcome as already achieved. See yourself as the person you desire to become - healthy, alive and active. Visualization is a powerful resource; if you can see it in your mind – you can create it in your reality.

The fifth step is pretty obvious - take action! Like the Nike slogan says: "Just Do It"! Make a plan and do it. Stick with it! At first it may be a bit of a pain in the butt, but I promise you if you stay committed it will become one of your favorite things you do. Having great health isn’t just good for you; it’s good for the mind and soul as well.
